We recently held the Badger Seminar titled: Beyond Life-long Learning via Modular Meta-Learning, with participants joining online and at our headquarters in Prague. The aim of the five-day seminar was to bring together the GoodAI Research team, our GoodAI Grants recipients, and other experts in the field in order to advance the research in life-long learning, meta-learning, multi-agent learning and other directions that we believe are relevant for building generally intelligent agents.

Our regular Badger Seminars borrow their name from GoodAI’s Badger architecture. The desired outcome…

Authors: GoodAI Team, and a special thank you to grant recipients for their contributions and comments.

Summary

  • In 2021/22 GoodAI will focus on four core research areas: learning to learn, lifelong (gradual) learning, open-endedness, and generalization/ extrapolation of meta-learned algorithms.
  • These areas are being investigated by the GoodAI core R&D team as well as grant recipients who have received funding through GoodAI Grants, to conduct research aligned with topics relevant to GoodAI’s Badger architecture principles.
  • This document outlines the requirements for the system GoodAI is developing and for the environment in which the system will be trained and tested, and paths…

When I was at the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo, one of the things I learned about was the difficulty of matching up the expected inputs and outputs of research projects in different fields so that those projects could work together. A researcher may work very hard to measure properties or estimate values that are considered central to the questions of their field, only to find that their potential collaborators can’t use that number because their questions operate at a different level of abstraction. Even within disciplines, one of the places that research often falls flat is…

Dr. Kai Arulkumaran

Summary

  • Dr. Kai Arulkumaran of Araya has received a grant from GoodAI in order to apply open-ended algorithms to generating video game content (such as spaceships and space stations) in the sandbox game Space Engineers.
  • The project aims to test the power of open-endedness in computational creativity and human-machine collaborative design, ending with an algorithm that can create fully functional and visually appealing game content.
  • The project will provide insights about the role of multi-agent interactions in open-ended, lifelong learning, which relates it to GoodAI’s research into lifelong-learning AI (Badger architecture).
  • GoodAI team will provide technical support for the project,

Open-ended…

This month The European Commission (EC) released a report on Humans and Societies in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is one of the first EC documents with long-term thinking about the impacts of AI and it talks clearly about AGI and safety. We are very pleased to have contributed to this report and believe it makes important contributions towards building a better future with artificial intelligence.

GoodAI’s contribution looked at the future impacts of AI on individuals and society at large. The contribution builds on GoodAI’s research of longer-term impacts, to which apart from Marek Havrda contribute COO…

Summary

  • Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh has received a grant from research and development company, GoodAI, in order to carry out research to make artificial intelligence (AI) better at generalizing and more curious. The research will be led by Assistant Professor Dr. Deepak Pathak.
  • The project aims to address generalization across different tasks and different environments in a modular system, driven by curiosity and modularity, with a zero-shot planning component.
  • The researchers aim to create a “joint learning framework,” that will mimic curiosity-driven learning while taking into account evolutionary changes.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s School of Computer Science…

Summary

  • Pauching Yap, PhD candidate at University College London (UCL) Centre for Artificial Intelligence, has been awarded a grant by research and development company, GoodAI, for her project that aims to insert Badger principles into an existing state-of-the art continual meta-learning framework.
  • She will use Bayesian Online Meta-Learning (BOML) framework to support continual learning while avoiding catastrophic forgetting.
  • She aims to extend the framework to support dynamic architectures for a wide range of tasks and to handle sequential task learning on different neural network topologies.

GoodAI has awarded a research grant to Pauching Yap, PhD candidate at UCL Centre for Artificial…

Summary

  • Researchers at MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have received funding from research and development company GoodAI, to work on the problem of how AI can solve new tasks efficiently by leveraging previous knowledge. The research will be led by PhD student Ferran Alet.
  • The researchers intend to use a combination of self-improving modular meta-learning with a polynomial-time inner loop which will allow AI models to generalize to new tasks from small amounts of experience by mastering combinatorial generalization.
  • The aim is to develop AI that can extrapolate to novel inputs, allow for broader generalization and scale from…

Research team L-R: Nathaniel Virgo — ELSI, Martin Biehl — Araya, and Acer Chang — Araya.

Summary

  • Research company Araya, based in Japan, has received a grant from GoodAI in order to carry out AI research into multi-agent systems from the perspective of information geometry. The research will be led by Research Scientist Dr. Martin Biehl.
  • The researchers aim to use modern mathematical methods to investigate how multiple agents with multiple goals interact when trying to achieve those goals. The interactions include all forms of communication, competition, cooperation, and coordination. Their framework should improve understanding of when and how multiple agents form a group that can again be seen as an agent with a goal.
  • These insights…

Summary

  • Cross Labs in Japan has received a grant, from GoodAI, in order to carry out artificial intelligence (AI) research. The research will be led by Postdoctoral Fellow Lisa Soros.
  • The research team will build a complex open-ended environment that will encourage AI to learn in a similar way to humans, by replicating the complex environments that humans learn in.
  • By using this environment they aim to create an artificial agent capable of open-ended improvement.

If we are to develop artificial intelligence (AI) capable of learning as humans do, it needs to be tested in complex environments just like humans are…
